THE PLANTATION JOURNEY SO FAR

Hariyali started it journey on the road of environment protection in 1996 with PLANTATION activity. The sight of several abandoned stone quarries and denuded barren forest land at Chitalsar, Manpada, Thane, with not even a single green shoot of life anywhere, was such a sore sight for the eyes of a few nature lovers, who happened to visit them by chance, that, then and there arose the urge to do something about it, to change the lifeless land by planting some life into it…. And started the first ever program of plantation of Hariyali! Environmentalist, nature lovers, ordinary but awake citizens, though a small group, came together with an urge that overwhelmed not just that group but every common man who got associated with the project and thus began the Hariyali journey from barrenness to greenery, from lifeless to the lively - flora and fauna, from environmental darkness to light for the humanity. And it has not just continued tirelessly for the past 25 years but has grown leaps and bound creating an entire conducive ecosystem with it. Rightly, Hariyali believes in leading by example by doing it and this has caught the imagination of countless nature lovers with whose patronage, we have progressed over the years.

PLANTATION ECOSYSTEM:

As plantation activity grew it was realised that Hariyali needs to do water management as well to support plantation. It was also felt necessary to have own saplings, thus the need for a nursery. For a good nursery it was necessary that there was prior seed collection activity. The entire activity needed huge human resource which was contributed through shram daan by the several HARIYALIANS through hundreds of hours of selfless service. The success story of HARIYALI is written on the thousands of trees planted over several hundred plantation sessions by thousands of volunteers of all ages ranging from the very senior citizens to the school going children, the ordinary nature loving citizens to the corporate giants, from teachers to students, engineers, doctors, chartered accountants, principals and or course the common man. Hariyali’s plantation activity is a story of collective success… and we all anyway owed it to mother nature.

PAST PROJECTS:

Hariyali has achieved several milestones and planted lakhs of trees over the year. In fact its tagline in marathi reads “Aata Aapule Ekach Laksha - Vruksha he laoo Laksha ni Laksh! “ Which translated in english means “We have set our eyes on only one goal – To plant lakhs and lakhs of trees”. The notable plantation projects, to name a few, are plantation at Manpada, Thane which now has about 20000 fully grown forest in the place of barren abandoned quarries, the forest at Bhavale near Lonad, Kalyan Bhiwandi road, which was a 7 year project jointly taken up with the forest department in the year 2008 and now boast of about 20000 big size trees with diverse flora and fauna, Plantations at Munda Dongar near Nagla Bunder, Thane.

An instruction sheet will give you the required tips for effective plantation. Do click here and read the entire instructions...

SELECTION OF TREES:

Hariyali is fortunate to have several biologist and environmentalist associated with it since inception. Their careful study coupled with the scientific knowledge on the subject of flora has enabled Hariyali to identify, plant and nurture trees of species that are most suited to the environmental conditions. This not only ensures better survival rate but more greenery, natural robustness and long life of the plants. If interested to know more just click here...

@KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Hariyali carries out plantation - one of its core activities - in a science-compliant way to the extent possible.
  • Hariyali believes strongly in biodiversity as regards plantation. Mono-culture of any kind such as that of Eucalyptus, Gliricyria, Subabhul, Teak etc. is strictly avoided
  • Hariyali selects native and local species of forest-friendly trees and gives low preference to non-native species.
  • Saplings of robust forest friendly species and some fruit types like mango, Jambhul, amla are considered for plantation, rather than ornamental garden plants.
  • There is a strong culture in Hariyali to ensure survival of plantation carried out which is often neglected. Appropriate post-plantation care is considered as vital towards this cause. Survival rates range from 70 - 90% depending upon terrain conditions, infrastructure/ facilities available at site and other social conditions.
  • Human interference is restricted to a minimum leaving the afforestation process to Mother Nature. In view of this, no chemical fertilizers, weedicides, pesticides are used so that nature's own cycle is not disturbed.
